Locksmith in Burlington, OntarioExit doors that open when they must.
Fire exits have one job, and it is the opposite of a lock's. We install and service push bars, exit alarms and door closers so a crowd can leave in seconds while the door stays secure from outside.
Heritage hardware asks for a different pace. Screws are slotted and soft, castings are irreplaceable, and the finish on a brass escutcheon took a century to arrive at. We work with hand tools where a drill would be careless, clean and re-spring original mechanisms, and cut keys for obsolete blanks by hand. Only when the metal itself has failed do we talk about a sympathetic replacement.
Identity checked, politely. For openings and key work we confirm you have the right to be there. We explain why we ask, and we ask everyone.
Work you can watch. There is nothing hidden about what we do. Stand beside us, ask questions, and we will show you what the lock looks like inside.
Clean hands, clean floor. We put down a mat where there is drilling, wipe the hardware down and leave the area as we found it, only with a working lock.

The call
After last night's power flicker the card reader beside the clinic door shows nothing. Fobs do nothing, the electric strike stays locked, and the small brass override key that came with the system is in a desk drawer on the far side of the…
The brass handleset has gone blotchy and green where the winter salt reaches it, and the coating on the deadbolt is lifting in flakes. It still locks, but it looks tired beside the fresh paint on the door.
The door from the garage into the kitchen closes on a passage knob with no lock at all. Anyone who opens the garage is one turn of a handle from the house, and the insurance renewal form has a question about exactly that.
Following a break-in, the instinct is to buy the biggest lock. The better response is to look at how entry was made and strengthen that path first, then consider a cylinder and key system that stops it happening by key rather than by force.
You have lost count of how many people have had a key to your house over the years: cleaners, a contractor, a former partner, the previous owner's family. The lock still works, but you no longer know who else it works for.
The keys the seller handed over came in a sandwich bag: six unlabelled copies for two locks of different makes from different decades. You have no idea how many more copies exist or who is holding them.

They did not get in. The attempt left a screwdriver gouge in the door edge, a strike plate bent outward and a deadbolt that now needs a shove to throw.

Owners sometimes ask whether they need a locksmith or an alarm company. Usually both, for different jobs. Locks and keys decide who can open the door; the alarm reports when someone does. The commercial pages cover our half of that arrangement.
Once a safe is open, the visit is only half finished. The lock is inspected for wear, corrosion or damage that caused the original problem, repaired or replaced if it is no longer reliable, and then set to a new combination chosen on the…
If You inherited a safe and nobody wrote down the combination.
Then Manipulation or a precise drill-and-repair opening.
Once open, the lock is reset to a combination of your choosing and the safe goes back into service.
If The electronic keypad on your safe beeps but will not open.
Then Diagnose the lock before anything drastic.
A flat battery, a loose cable or a lockout timer are common; a failed lock body is replaced with a matching unit.
If You are bringing a safe home and want it anchored.
Then Bolt it to the floor and set the combination.

About 47% of homes in Burlington were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census. In an area where homes span several eras, one street may have original mortise locks and the next builder-grade cylinders. A locksmith working here carries parts for both, so whichever door he meets, the job finishes in one visit.
Single-detached houses make up about 50% of homes in Burlington (2021 Census).Where houses and attached homes share an area, lockouts are as varied as the doors. A porch, a hallway or a shared vestibule each calls for a slightly different approach, and a locksmith used to all three arrives ready for whichever it is.

What actually makes a lock high security?
Three things working together. The cylinder has a second locking mechanism, usually a sidebar released by finger pins or rotating pins, plus hardened steel in the path of a drill, so picking, bumping and drilling take far longer than on an ordinary lock. The deadbolt and strike are heavier and fastened into the framing. And the key is cut on a patented or restricted blank that only an authorised person can have copied. Remove any one and the door is weaker than the label suggests.
Will my door look different afterwards?
Barely. A high security cylinder sits in the same place as the old one and is usually distinguished only by a different keyway shape and sometimes a hardened collar. A graded deadbolt is a standard-looking deadbolt in your chosen finish. The reinforced strike is longer than the plate it replaces and the wrap-around reinforcer, if used, shows as a neat metal band on the door edge. The difference is felt when you lock up, not seen from the street.
Are high security locks only for businesses?
Not at all. Homes are the most common place they are fitted, especially after a move, a break-in nearby, or the realisation that too many keys have been handed out over the years. A graded deadbolt with a patented cylinder and a reinforced strike is a modest, quiet upgrade for a front or side door. Businesses tend to go further, with laboratory-rated cylinders, heavy lock bodies and a documented key system across many doors.
What proof do I need to show before locks are changed?
The locksmith confirms that the person ordering the work is entitled to change the locks: the owner, a tenant with the landlord's agreement, or a property or facilities manager for a business. Photo identification and something linking you to the address usually settle it, and for a company a letter or a call to the named contact does the same. It protects you as much as anyone, since the same check stops someone else from changing your locks.
