Broken Key Extraction

That key had been bending a little for years, and you kept straightening it. Today it finally cracked at the deepest cut.

In plain words

If a key has just snapped in your lock, the most helpful thing you can do is nothing further to the lock. Keep the half in your hand, note whether the door is locked, and resist the tweezers and the glue, both of which push the piece deeper and add material the locksmith must clear first. On the phone, describe the lock, whether any of the blade shows, and whether the key turned when it broke. Have photo identification to hand, or the ownership papers if it is a vehicle. That short conversation means the locksmith arrives with the right extractors and a plan.

How the visit goes

Steel push bar with a latch housing, hinge plate, screws, screwdriver and tape measure on a worn bench beside an open box. — Longmoor
  1. Scene 1

Reading the cylinder for the cause

Even a lock in good order can break a key that was already worn, bent or fatigued, so the cylinder is examined for a contributing cause all the same. The locksmith looks for grit and salt crust in the keyway, a cylinder cap that has loosened and let the plug shift, pins that have worn flat so the key needs force to lift them, springs that have weakened, and burrs at the mouth of the keyway that drag on the blade. On an exterior door the strike and hinges are checked as well, since a bolt that binds in its pocket makes the key carry the load. Each finding shapes the advice given once the fragment is out.

  2. Scene 2

Drawing it out with a hook extractor

Every keyway has grooves, called wards, that run along its length above and below the blade. A hook extractor is a slim strip of spring steel thin enough to ride in one of those grooves beside the fragment. The locksmith slides it in past the broken piece, rotates it slightly so the barbed tip catches a cut in the blade, and draws it back out in a straight line. The pins are lifted clear as the piece passes them, exactly as they are when a key is withdrawn. It is a patient, felt process, and the cylinder is untouched by it.

  3. Scene 3

A door that no longer fights the key

If the bolt had been dragging in its strike, that is corrected while the locksmith is there, because a bolt that binds turns every key into a lever. Dropped hinges get longer screws driven into the framing; a strike pocket that pinches the bolt is filed or shifted; a weatherstrip that was pushing the door off square is pared back. The test is simple: the thumb-turn should throw the bolt with one finger and no push on the door. Since wood swells in humid summers and shrinks in dry winter air, a seasonal glance at the screws keeps the key from taking the strain again.

In the van

What shapes the quoteElizabeth Gardens Locksmith Pros

Removing the cylinder to free it
A deep or bound fragment may need the cylinder taken off the door and the plug pushed out from behind on the bench. That disassembly and reassembly is quoted on its own.
Anything added since the break
Glue, a second key or marks from a screwdriver mean clearing and sometimes repair before extraction can start, and that added time is named in the quote.
Condition of the cylinder
Worn pins, a loose cap, grit or corrosion found after the piece is out may call for a service, a rekey or a new cylinder, each explained and quoted separately.

Straight answers

Is a broken key a sign the whole lock is worn out?

Sometimes, and the visit answers it. A key that failed from its own fatigue in a clean, smooth cylinder says nothing against the lock. A key that broke because the pins were worn flat, the cap had loosened or the keyway was full of grit says the cylinder needs a service or a rekey. One that broke in a corroded, pitted plug is telling you the lock is due for replacement.

Can a new key be made from the two broken halves?

Usually. Laid end to end, the halves show the full set of cuts and identify the blank, and a locksmith reads them with a gauge and cuts a fresh key to those depths on a code machine. That is better than tracing the broken blade on a duplicator, because a worn key copied is a worn key repeated. If a spare or the key code exists, that is used instead.

What should I do while I wait for the locksmith?

Put both halves of the key somewhere safe, note whether the door or vehicle is locked, and leave the keyway alone. If it is bitter cold, keep the storm door closed so the lock is not taking freezing rain. Have identification ready, or vehicle papers for a car. If the door is open, stay near it. That is all; the extraction goes smoother for a lock nobody has poked at.

2021 census: what it means at the door

Every square is one home in a hundred.

  • 47 in 100 homes · mixed ages
  • About 47% of homes in Burlington were built in 1980 or earlier, according to the 2021 Census. In neighbourhoods with a mix of older and newer homes, the finishes on the doors vary widely: aged brass, satin nickel, matte black. A locksmith serving such an area keeps a range of finishes so replacement hardware suits each house.
  • Single-detached houses make up about 50% of homes in Burlington (2021 Census).Where housing is mixed, the same street can hold a solid wood front door, a steel townhouse door and a metal-clad suite door. A locksmith fits each with hardware suited to its construction, so every neighbour ends up with a door that locks properly.
